Living In The Past - Original Demo 1960

Living In The Past

Words & Music © 1860 by Sherman Keene

Instrumental solo

Some people tell me their lives go so fast

Other people tell me the don’t know how they last

Seems to me that many never gather what they sow

They just seem to be living way too slow

Instrumental solo

I know a man who was in love and never can forget

He spends his whole life wishing that he could get her back

So I just want to say that life goes slowly on

You can’t bring back a love that’s lost you’ve got to move along

CHORUS

They don’t know that their hearts are built to last

They-don’t-know they’re living in the past

Instrumental solo

People get tired and they’re workin’ all the time and they

they think they’re sick when-they should be feeling fine

If they only knew what’s in their mind comes true

they could change their mind and change their life

and have, bet-ter times too

CHORUS

They don’t, want their hard times to last

They-don’t-know they’re living in the past

Instrumental solo

There are some who will tell you that they

Know more than you do

They think their extra years, should make this true

The young know more than they can understand

They can understand

And they feel old and their emotions get cold and

They don’t know, when to cry or laugh

They don’t know they’re living in the past

Instrumental solo

People die and leave their time on Earth

As a Free Spirit-they-may-choose another birth

Those who are left behind who mourn the loss all the time

Have be-gun to live life in the past

CHORUS

And there are people who are living in the past

They-don’t-know they’re living in the past

And then there are some folks who never move around

They think that life means that they must settle down

And they will tell you, this is the way to go

But life goes with you—anywhere you go

CHORUS

And there are people who are living in the past

They-don’t-know they’re living in the past

And there are people who are living in the past

They-don’t-know they’re living in the past

Ring Them Bells - Bob Dylan
Sung By Sarah Jarosz

Ring them bells, ye heathen

From the city that dreams,

Ring them bells from the sanctuaries

Cross the valleys and streams,

For they’re deep and they’re wide

And the world’s on its side

And time is running backwards

And so is the bride.

Ring them bells Saint Peter

Where the four winds blow,

Ring them bells with an iron hand

So the people will know.

So it's rush hour now

On the wheel and the plow

And the sun is going down

Upon the sacred cow.

Instrumental Verse

Ring them bells Sweet Martha,

For the poor man’s son,

Ring them bells so the world will know

That God is the one.

Oh the shepherd is asleep

Where the willows weep

And the mountains are filled

With his lost sheep.

Ring them bells for the blind and the deaf,

Ring them bells for all of us who are left,

Ring them bells for the chosen few

Who will judge the many when the game is through.

Ring them bells, for the time that flies,

For the child that cries

When innocence dies.

Ring them bells Saint Catherine

From the top of the room,

Ring them from the fortress

For the lilies that bloom.

Oh the lines are long

And the fighting is strong

And they’re breaking down the distance

Between right and wrong.

###

If you recall, Captain Nemo had a pipe organ in his salon. Before mounting each attack on warships he would play loud, solemn music.

In this pipe organ version of the recording, I have attempted to make the sound of a loud pipe organ echoing through the reverberant insides of an all-metal submarine.

COMMENTS

“It is pretty spooky. You got very chromatic there. It sounds awesome. I love how you’re using reverb creatively.” —Raul—

“Wow! That is a sonic Masterpiece! I love it! Keep going! Take us to new-depths!” —Gregg—
